Renovation

We have now finished  our renovation of the 3800-square-foot space and 1000-square-foot addition.  We are enjoying the dorms, the "Walter Bagley" dining hall, the bathroom and laundry room, the newly renovated offices and most importantly the kitchen.

We continue to benefit from the generosity of the community, with the electrical workers’ union (IBEW) providing free electrical design and work and other construction-related firms providing us with discounted prices for their services.  Examples include free rental of power tools, a free dumpster, and reduced-cost appliances for the kitchen and laundry.

This shelter will provide dormitory space for up to 36 men, plus an apartment for a resident manager to oversee operations and to perform routine maintenance.  We have acquired most of the furniture and equipment needed to operate the shelter but we are still in need of some vital kitchen equipment in order to complete the kitchen. We are reaching out to the community to help us with this!!! We have received donations of items such as dishes, cutlery, television, linens, toiletries, clothing and many more items. We have recieve generous donations large enough to purchase a walk in freezer and a two door commercial refrigerator.

We have been raising funds from the community for this purpose and have received some small grants.  Our shelter guests have also been working towards this goal: A local building owner invited us to tear down his building and to salvage useful material for our purposes, including windows, doors, insulation, bathroom fixtures, and a commercial hearing&air conditioning unit.  These have be put to use in the renovation.

The warehouse on the same property is available for our use at no cost until it is rented by the Downtown Dover Partnership.  For now, it serves as storage for donations of furniture, dishes, pots and pans, and linens that are needed by guests who move out into private housing.  We try to help each of them to get a good start.
